Azelaic Acid For Hair Loss
You might’ve heard that azelaic acid can be an effective way to fight hair loss but you’re most likely unsure of whether or not this method actually works or if it just another piece of folk wisdom.
In this article, we’re going to give you the truth behind whether or not these claims are accurate. We’ll use scientific studies to put the claims to the test, teach you the best way to use azelaic acid on your hair, and how to avoid any side effects in the process.
What does the Research Say?
Azelaic acid hasn’t been studied that much as a treatment for hair loss. This is most likely going to change in the near future as the search for effective hair loss treatment progresses. The first study on azelaic acid was conducted more than 25 years ago.
The study aimed to see whether zinc or azelaic acid is better at blacking and treating DHT. The second study was conducted in 2005 and compared the efficacy of anthralin when compared to azelaic acid.
It’s also worth noting that this ingredient is significantly more effective when used to treat men rather than women — seeing as DHT is the leading cause of hair loss for men.
While research on azelaic acid may be in its early stages and trials haven’t been conducted, it doesn’t mean that it’s not effective in treating hair loss, it just means that isn’t a treatment that’s been proven to work… yet.
Before we give you our seal of approval and recommendation for hair loss solutions, we try to check whether or not these treatments are tried and tested. That being said, azelaic acid does seem to have some promising studies on the surface.
Azelaic Acid VS Finasteride
Finasteride and azelaic acid both do the same thing, but which one of them is better? First of all, let’s have a look at the structure of finasteride, testosterone, and azelaic acid. The structure of finasteride is similar to that of testosterone.
It’s a good inhibitor for Type 25-alpha reductase that turns testosterone into DHT — dihydrotestosterone. If you’ve done your homework, you already know that high levels of DHT in your scalp is what causes hair loss.
If you hope to lower the DHT level in your scalp to reverse hair loss, you’ll need to find something to prevent it from springing up in the first place. DHT is produced when reductase swallows normal testosterone.
When finasteride is in your system, the reductase will bind to that instead of to your testosterone which blocks the production of DHT before it even starts. Azelaic acid has a structure that’s very different from testosterone. 5-alpha reductase isn’t as keen on eating azelaic acid as it has in finasteride.
That said, when you surround reductase with enough azelaic acid molecules, it will end up inadvertently swallowing some azelaic acid which will deactivate the enzyme before it can convert testosterone into DHT.nThis is why you need higher concentrations of azelaic acid in comparison to finasteride.
